BMW Cooling System Buyer Notes
BMW cooling systems deserve respect during a used-car inspection.
Many engines are strong when maintained correctly, but aging plastic parts, housings, expansion tanks, and coolant connections can become ownership-cost triggers.
What to inspect
Look for:
- Dried coolant residue
- Sweet smell after warm-up
- Low coolant warnings
- Expansion tank age
- Water pump or thermostat history
- Plastic hose connections
- Evidence of repeated top-ups
Coolant leaks can be subtle when cold and obvious only when the system is hot and pressurized.
Why it matters
Cooling problems are rarely exciting, but they protect expensive parts. Overheating risk can turn a manageable repair into engine damage.
Practical rule
If the cooling system history is unknown, make preventive inspection part of the purchase budget.
